Ms. Santore
Hello, my Name is Ms. Santore and I teach ELA (English Language Arts) to grade 6. During ELA we have two periods together each day. One class period we focus on reading. In reading, we read books and short stories together as a class and independent books you read on your own. When reading literature, we focus on different reading skills such as character traits, character change, theme, and making inferences just to name a few. When reading nonfiction text, we look for the central idea and supporting details, identify all the various parts of the text, and many other key strategies and skills to make you the best readers possible. All through the year we focus on vocabulary. During our writing time we spend time working on personal narratives, literary essays, research, and argument writing. We work on the structure of an essay including paragraphing, what goes into each part of your writing, how to find text evidence, quote accurately, and explain your thinking in your own words. All the work we do in class prepares the students for the New York State ELA Test. We use notebooks and devices during the year, so the students are exposed to handwriting work but also typing and looking up research properly on the computer. In class I would teach grade level work in a mini lesson or read aloud. We then move into small groups and independent work. In small groups I focus on the students' skills and strategies they need for success. There are also days where I conference one on one with students to see how they are doing and what individual support I can give. They students are expected to read 30 minutes a night. 3 days a week for homework they are writing a reading response about their book. Students are expected to come to class on time and be prepared. Students should always have an independent reading book with them, we have many in our classroom. Students should participate, work hard, always do their best, ask questions, and be kind. I want your child to succeed, and I am always available for students and parents/guardians to reach out and ask questions. We work as a team to get all children working to their fullest potential and to be successful. I love teaching. I love my students! I love books and writing! You can always reach out to me at csantore@schools.nyc.gov

Middle School General Music I couldn’t be more excited to begin this next chapter of my career as a new member of the PS/ MS 20 community! With over twenty years experience working as a professional musician, bandleader, composer and arranger, I bring all of this knowledge to my students with the hopes of instilling in them the same love that I have for music. In my classes, we focus on all aspects of the music-making process: reading, writing, listening to, analyzing, creating and performing music. By studying music through both a historical and contemporary cultural lens, we can all be enriched by the multifaceted beauty that a lifelong engagement with the performing arts provides. When I’m not in the classroom, you will find me improvising at the piano, immersed in an epic symphony, or hanging out with my beautiful wife and kids. Here’s to a wonderful year discovering and embracing the power of music! George Dulin GDulin@schools.nyc.gov
